Pauls Calls on McDevitt to Return Excessive Campaign Contributions from Local 54 If McDevitt Returns $8K in Excessive Contributions from Brother’s Union, Pauls Agrees to Debate him on the Hurley in the Morning Radio Program Republican Freeholder Candidate Will Pauls today challenged Freeholder McDevitt to return $8,000 in excessive campaign contributions he received in violation of Atlantic County’s Pay to Play ordinance as a pre-condition to debate on the ‘Hurley in the Morning’ radio program. “According to campaign finance reports my opponent personally signed, in 2010 McDevitt accepted $10,600 from Local 54, the largest labor union in South Jersey, which just so happens to be run by his brother, the former Atlantic City Democrat leader,” said Will Pauls. “What is even more disturbing is that while McDevitt disclosed the first $2,400 he received in July of 2010, he waited until 18 months after the election to disclose the additional $8,200 he received in October of that same year.” “In retrospect it’s pretty clear what McDevitt was trying to hide,” continued Pauls. “Those contributions likely put him $2,400 over the Election Law Enforcement Commission's limit of $8,200 and more than 4x the $2,600 limit imposed by the County Pay to Play ordinance he had so adamantly championed during his 2007 and 2010 campaigns. His actions are completely unacceptable and an insult to the legacy of Republican Leadership here in Atlantic County.” “During a recent interview on the Hurley in the Morning Program McDevitt committed to owning up to any mistakes on his reports,” continued Pauls. “On the same program Mr. Hurley offered to host a debate between us. While my opponent failed to show up at a number of candidate forums prior to and including the Atlantic County Republican Convention, if he takes this opportunity to finally rectify his Pay to Play violations, then I will accept the invitation. It is now up to Freeholder McDevitt to decide whether hanging on to illicit campaign cash means more to him than the oath he swore as an Atlantic County Freeholder.” ###
