Frank D. Formica

Biography

Born in Atlantic City on January 16, 1952, Frank D. Formica is a second generation American Italian. Frank’s grandfather, Francesco, arrived in America in 1902 at the age of 20 and in 1912 opened a grocery store on Mississippi Avenue with his wife Rosa and eventually Formica’s Bakery in 1919. Both of Frank’s parents were born and raised in the Ducktown section of Atlantic City, NJ.

Frank started working in the family bakery business while attending St. Michael’s Grammar School. Frank learned at an early age the principles of hard work and the importance of giving back to the community. After graduation from Holy Spirit High School, he purchased the Venice Italian Bakery, in Atlantic City and operated it with his father until 1979. Frank enlisted and served in the United States Air Force from 1972-1974.

In 1979, Frank joined Resorts International Hotel Casino organization and became Executive Administrator. During his tenure with Resorts, Frank was responsible for budget and salary administration, hiring and training of the gaming staff. He oversaw daily operations of the casino floor and supervised the management of a staff of over 1500 employees.

In 1987 he purchased Formica Bros. Bakery from his father and uncles, which he continues to own and operate today. The business serves approximately 300 wholesale customers in Atlantic County and over 750 daily retail customers at its two bakery café’s (Atlantic City and Northfield, NJ). In 2007 he established a joint venture with Jack Mulloy (Ginsburg Bakery) called Baker Boys. Baker Boys co-packs a variety of breads for major companies in the North East Region.

In addition to running and operating Formica Bros. Bakery, Frank owns and develops real estate. For over thirty years he has managed commercial and residential rental properties and has invested in and managed a number of real estate development ventures through-out the county. Frank, along with his partner Frank Alberti, built the largest privately funded residential complex in 2008 in Atlantic City (AC Estates).

Frank founded the Ducktown Revitalization Association in 1991 with over 100 neighborhood businesses and continues as President today. Since creation, the DRA has applied nearly 2 million dollars of grant money toward the improvement and development of the neighborhood. Frank is a member of the Greater Atlantic County Economic Development Commission, serving on this commission since 2007. He is also a board member of Dante Hall Theatre of the Arts, and has been a member of the Screen Actors Guild since 1985. Frank is member of the American Baker’s Association and recently testified before the US Congress on their behalf. Frank served on the first Atlantic City Business development Board, St. Michael’s Development Corporation responsible for constructing Dante Hall and other Ducktown neighborhood developments. In 2008, Frank received the World of Difference award from the Chelsea Neighborhood Association in recognition for his contributions to the community. Frank is a lifetime member of St. Michael’s Church, Atlantic City, New Jersey and actively supports a variety of Church committees. He is also active in UNICO (an Italian American organization dedicated to higher education and supporting local charity organizations) and is a member of the Columbus Day Committee Hall of Fame.

Frank was elected to the Freeholder Board in 2009 to represent the Second Freeholder District.

Frank has actively supported youth programs in his community. He was a Ventnor Pirates football coach and hockey coach at both the grammar school and high school level.

Frank resides in Margate, New Jersey with his wife Ruth. He is the father of four children, Donna, Rachel, Marie and Frank. He is grandfather to Vincent, Nicolas, Madison, and Matthew.
